So I had the distinct privilege of seeing Wallpaper perform twice during their jaunt around the city. The duo of Arjun Singh (drums) and Ricky Reed (vox and keyboard) hail from the beloved city of Oakland, California. You may remember Oakland for blessing us with such gems as Scraper Bikes and Keak da Sneak.

So take Chromeo, add a bunch of Pfunkt, little bit o' Biggie and some general ridiculousness and you have birthed a stellar brainchild which makes you want to hump inanimate objects. Wallpaper, thankfully, will be back in New York this week for CMJ - likely wearing some sort of gold lame and making people dance. You should definately try to get to the shows. I can safely say that my evenings at Wallpaper shows have been some of the most amusing I've had in NEw York - and if you're lucky, you might have Mr. Reed grinding all up on you by the end of the night.

Friday night I was able to go see the British band Polytechnic at the mercury lounge on friday whom I discovered at Camden Crawl this year. I actually bought their album right away after hearing them and... thats a rarity. I was expecting it to be pretty empty since no one seems to know who they are, and I was right. It's ok because it seemed like they were doing a private show for just me. We started talking to Dylan the guitarist/lead singer and they were really chill guys. We tried to meet up at a few parties during the weekend, but it didn't seem to happen. Nevertheless, you all missed out bc they are good and you were most likely not there and I believe you can dance to their tunes. If you can't, then you are not fun.

A Health-y Helping

Thursday night and i'm exhausted for basically no reason and watching Casper for memories sake (and since its on and everything else on TV sucks balls and I'm actually a retarded 10 years old girl). Nevertheless this band, Health has caught my attention. They seem to be gaining much recent popularity and I say rightfully so. They are pretty much effectively constructed noise-rock or whatnot, but then have become popular in the dance world. Everyone seems to be remixing their shit and it sounds good! There is even a myspace page, Disco//Health that simply just consists of remixes of their tunessss. Pretty sweet. If my band, Awkward Ponies, ever become famous (and we will considering all we have is a completely original concept and no actual music composition but i think me on the synthesizer/keyboard should be enough) I want a remix page made. I love those bands that you just do not get sick of for some reason. It could also be I try to hold onto my London memories for as long as I can. Because honestly, the states have yet compared to it by the slightest bit (at least for me). I think to me it's mostly the energy at clubs or concerts. Lets stop the pretentiousness and do whatever the fuck our bodies tell us to do and that is dance your heart out. It doesn't matter how dumb you look. I'm pretty positive I always look like an idiot, but thats the fun it. Continuing along, I am still loving the Foals. They just released their video for Balloons and it got me excited. I don't really understand the 20's flapper girl business going on, but I guess it works even though they creep me out.

My friend introduced me to Pictureplane from Colorado (hence the name of the post) because he is a bit obsessed with him. I've grown to really like him as well. Surprised that he's not bigger than he is now. He's did a remix of crystal castles, but his own stuff is real tight. I get to listen to it at work and start aching to dance, but then don't want to look like a complete idiot in doing so. Quite frankly, Russ Chimes is doing his thing. Are you tired of Kavinsky? Every song sounding like the 8 bit akward lovechild of Duckhunt and Nightrider? Russ Chimes has managed to stick with the same catchy 80's synths in a manner which has some really impressive layering. Lush composition (Almost to the point of M83's Teen Angst) while still being dancey as hell. Hailing from the South London neighborhood of Southwark (Pronounced Southerk for us yanks) the unsigned musician and graphic designer is definitely worth checking out. This is honestly the most excited I've been about an artist in a long time. Not to mention, he's a super nice guy, so if you're feeling his music... let him know about it.

Just A Tiny Bit Late....................

FINALLY. Kind of settled in New York. I miss Chicago. So i will reminisce of chicago. the last 2 weeks was basically filled with drinking, partying, concerts and.... more drinking. it was fabulous. I will just recap with the New Young Pony Club show on Oct 24. I know. I'm not late talking about it at all.

Overall Review: FUN
I love seeing everyone in the packed venue dance their hearts out, whether it be the man with the curly mullet or the girl doing some weird 'professional' dance moves in the front. The lead Tahita Bulmer had so much fucking energy bouncing around all over the place. And I thoroughly enjoy the guitarist's space-esque silver jacket. He looked so fucking cool I don't care if other people didn't like it. I think I was sweating balls dancing. It reminded me of shows in London which is a MAJOR PLUS.

Nevertheless, I had a great time. It was probably the night I consumed the least amount of alcohol (which was 3 or 4 tall boys) all week. Walter Meego opened. I feel like he always opens for people. Does he play all the time? Maybe it's just because he is from chicago. They're good. Not great. I haven't seen him or them since I saw Ratatat at Sonotheque maybe.... 3 years ago? Don't remember. But apparently he grew in band members from 1 to 3. I was the only one confused about this. I did see the Fool's Gold show but lets just say the performers were great, but Steve Aoki showing up and fucking around on stage pissed the hell out of me. So I won't speak of that show much longer.

Muscles is described by his distributor (in an attempt to be witty) as an Australian who was locked in a closet with a Super Nintendo, a drum machine and some other shit. I, personally, would compare him to a more electronic Electric Six on a lot of drugs. His recent release Guns, Babes, Lemonade - on Modular Records, has managed to push the threshold of my patience right to the edge of being annoying before going over the edge. TEPR, or Tanguy Destable has just released his Junior album "En Direct de la Cote." Dude toured with Yelle during Parklife as her dj. Blew up pretty recently for remixing A Cause des Garcons by the aforementioned French clone of Uffie.

Album is really solid. When I got to hang out with MSTRKRFT's JFK, he said it's "so musical, really well put together..." TEPR was happy to hear it and said, "I had no idea MSTRKRFT knew who the hell I was..."

I Still Do Not Like Jack Penate

When I was in London, everyone always talked about Jack Penate. And from the beginning I did not like his music. I was asked in queue for friendly fires at camden crawl if i like him and immediately yelled no. Then everyone around stared at me as if I was crazy (as they stand there to collect little Jack Penate pins and etc). I don't know why but he seriously frustrates me. I don't think his songs are catchy or even good or even remotely enjoyable to listen to. yes. I will continue to vent about not liking Jack Penate. Trust me I tried, but I have come to terms that it is never going to happen.

Same goes with Jamie T. So damn whiny.

I will have a better post tomorrow. Hopefully before my night of drinking and celebrating my move to New York. I will enjoy Chicago to every last drop. ( i will probably gain about 30 pounds in these next two weeks from the amount of greasy fatty food I will eat and the immense amount of alcohol I will consume). Here is a stupid song that people like and you probably will too. But I am going to stand firm and continue not to like it. Why did I even write an entire post on him then? i dont know.

During my extremely difficult temp job, I think I listened to it about a million times. And here is my review. Its a good album. Not amazing like one seems to be making it out to be. My personal favorite is Weird Fish/Arpeggi. I think mostly because it puts me in a better mood than the rest of the songs for some odd reason. I think the best thing about this album is the title because.... I like rainbows and to be IN a rainbow would be pretty fantastic.

I am having difficulties functioning in life at the moment because I am once again addicted to that stupid game Snood. I am so obsessed it is not even funny. I got my roommate addicted to it to. The other roommate is addicted to Solataire (that I dont really understand). Has nothing to do with music but I am so consumed with it that it needs to be mention. Hopefully this obsession will end.... tomorrow....

Besides that, my favorite TV show at this moment, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia had a hilarious episode this week and I was dying on the floor of laughter. I love Charlie. and I love that show.

Basically in the last 2 hours my eye has become clearly infected as it is scaring my roommate and I've suddenly gotten sick with a runny nose and general congestion. Being in New York for the past week, I have been all over the place. The possibility of me moving there has become greater. hmmm.
The only show that I was able to catch was Bloc Party at msg. It was good. Not amazing. But definitely entertaining. Sounded great live, I'll give them that. The crowd could have been more into it. Strange mix of ppl. I scalped my ticket, and the guy who sold me his said he had to go watch the Cubs game on tv. Cubs? Do ppl actually care? i guess so. I don't.
I didn't catch Tokyo Police Club at all because I was too busy drinking before the show. I think it was for the best.
My final review of the show? Eh. Entertaining. Glad to be drunk for it. Not worth what I paid for it. The end.

I have been 1) too lazy and 2) somewhat sick to go to the many shows that seemed to be going on. I have been enjoying the Modeselektor , Happy Birthday album. I had it for awhile but never got around to really listen to it. Its definitely interesting in the genre aspect. Hard to classify. But whether it be the electronic beats with a hop or techno, it seems to work and come together. The album has songs featuring Thom Yorke, Maximo Park, Puppetmastaz. Interesting. My eye hurts. OOOO ive never been so angry at something in my life. It has gotten to the point where you are sitting there yelling at a tiny machine as if it can understand what you are saying and that yelling will actually be effective. Nevertheless it is driving me crazy. The guys at the Apple store say that I'm a bad parent and I say, You, working at the Apple store, you're an idiot. (sorry, anger...problems..) This is my 4th Ipod in 2 and a half years. If i wasn't such a broke ass, I would probably go get another one. Or maybe I can unknowingly seduce the employee like last time to have him give me a brand new, more expensive, newer model for free.
Alright, time for a necessary break from trying to fix my Ipod.So these guys, Partyshank, I have been thoroughly enjoying. A lot of feedback I've heard about these guys were that it was too noisy and a bit irritating, but I think its quite clever. They basically combine electro beats with noises from children's toys into tunes that turn a dancefloor into a riot. I mean if I only thought of that and was actually capable of making music in general, I would be able to make some mad creative beats. (hahahahahahahahahaahaha i mean if sitting in my apt with my guitar and with the amp on and not actually playing counts as a skill)
And can they get any better having sets dressed in a hot dog costume? Definitely. Check out the song Penis vs Vagina on their myspace because I don't have it.

So The Cool Kids have been getting pretty big lately, huh? Kinda crazy considering that Chuck, or previously known as Evan was just some random dude that my roommate met her first year of college and would come over to her apt occasionally to chill. Now they are everywhere! When I was in NY 2 weeks ago they were there, pitchfork, CMJ, touring nonspot apparently and people are loving them. I was never big on hip/hop but I do like their old school styleeeeeeee. Its really great for them to be getting so much attention. I love when hipsters gather and pretend to be ghetto by listening to rap and starting dancing/bopping "ghetto". Its hilarious and I love it.

I am planning on seeing them with Flosstradamus at their free show at the MCA on Oct 7th. All my favorite things come together that day: modern art, sick music, and Free. (I love free and Flosstradamus).

So according to Shitdisco's myspace, their North American toured has been canceled. Shit! Thats lame. Apparently band member Joel has gotten violently sick and the doctor's don't know what is wrong with him. Thats unfortunate.
Seeing them was my motivation to go to the Klaxons show here at the Vic next week. I should have gone to see them in Shoreditch, London, but instead went to the lame club Mahiki in Mayfair pretending to be rich. Should I still go see the Klaxons? Eh. Maybe. We'll see, since I'll be getting back to Chi from New York that day.

I do like dancing though. Which is why my roommate and I have no pants dance parties every night. Or at least nights we drink. Or ok, every night. People are more than welcome to come to our no pants dance parties, and I will dj and it will be sick. That was irrelevant to this post.

Don't mind me that I am a huge nerd that I have actually thought about how I miss math classes and solving math equations (its true. Ask my roommate, I talk about it all the time). I guess I can satisfy this longing my listening to my favorite math rock band. I am a huge fan of the UK band, the Foals. I think they're great with their rhythmic complexity, yet danceable tunes. Dancing is always appreciated, even if you look like a drunken idiot. I do regret not seeing them at Camden Crawl in London because I hear they put on a sick show.

Everyone loves that damn show Heroes. I will admit I started watching it.. um yesterday. I caved. Goddamnit. Thats why I am selling my tv. So basically it is on, and I am in my party room right now listening to random music.
The new M.I.A. album, Kala is really good. I didn't like at first from first listen, but more and more I have gotten into. Not allowed to put any of her songs up, but take a listen. I personally like Paper Planes. Her lyrics inspired by politics and humanity can grasp your imagination and makes you want to go out and do something and be a hero (beside sit at home and read music blogs and watch Heroes, not that I am doing that now or anything).

This has nothing to do with Heroes, but I am really liking this song.

ts getting a lot of buzz lately. La Priest is the singer Sam of Late of the Pier's side project. It could be something big. big. big. big.

French electro can be heroes these days I swear. The French and Ed Banger seems to be pushing out artists actually making American hipsters dance. And I thought that would be impossible only a few years ago. Straaatch is no different. They make us want to dance. Their dirty electro is more to the liking of the Institubes fellas. Take a listen. Simian Mobile Disco @ Empty Bottle 9.18.07

After seeing them in Boston in the completely unnatural setting, I was excited to be able to see them again a few days later at one of my favorite venues in Chicago. And I am not gonna complain about the free entry with RSVP and the free Budweiser Select, (shit i got drunk in an hour) and the ton of Redken hair product I seemed to leave the place with.
Negatives: Again, weird crowd. It was definitely more tolerable than the Boston show at the Avalon, but it was still awkward. It also didn't make sense for Flavorpill to close the RSVP list about a week earlier due to full capacity, but from what I could see, the space was hardly at capacity. Simian Mobile Disco should be envoking the entire place to dance and have a good time, but there were only about 6 or 7 people dancing in the front. What the fuck? " People don't dance no more (uh huh) They just stand there like this (yeah!) They cross their arms and stare you down and drink and moan and piss (ok!)" -(the Rapture understands).
I still danced, even though I was probably being stared down at. I think SMD show might have been better at the Avalon. The crowd definitely seemed more appreciative and even though people might have been grinding or other ridiculousness, they still enjoyed themselves. The afterparty at Funky Buddha was quite entertaining, with the "hot body contest" (which was more like who wants to show their dick or tits contest)। The Simian dj set was pretty whack. I think it lasted about 15 minutes before they had to close the place down. WHACK. But its all good, i was drunk and probably being an asshole because that is what I am good at when drunk. (Ok lets not kid ourselves, when I am sober as well).

I've never been to Boston before, but my friend informed me Boston is full of weirdos. Affirmative. Dan Deacon was of course great. Too bad that my friends and I were misinformed of the concert start time, so they all missed the set, beside me who saw about half of it. He always manages to make every show a great time and didn't fail here. The space was huge and Dan acknowledged this and there weren't that many people there for his set but it was still fun. He did do the same gauntlet that he did at HideOut the previous weekend in Chicago. People seemed to get really into prancing down the human made "gauntlet". Once Simian Mobile Disco got on stage, all the freaks and weirdos came out of nowhere. Dancing shitbags were in my way. I had to go all the way to the back to where it was less crowded and more room for me to enjoy the show. The set was really sweet. I think the large space helped with Simian's lights and such. The unnatural scene was a bit overwhelming that I decided it was time for me to get wasted and.... I never fail at that goal. Before I knew it, Girl Talk was on and I was drunk. I now thought it was necessary for me to make my way in to stage. Then, I had the time of my life dancing in center front row of the show and having everyone on the floor watch me make a fool out of myself. AWESOME! If I didn't get myself drunk, this concert would have probably not been up to par to what the lineup proposed. Girl Talk seems to be a great time. Gregg Gills has not failed me yet. This day I was endlessly waiting for to arrive, finally did and it was more than I expected. My brave soul and companion, amanda flew to New York for Calvin's American debut. Having seen him 3 and 1/2 times (the 1/2 accounts for the time the douchebag bouncer let us in like halfway through the entrance until his set was over, fucker) in London, I knew what a great show this would be. Especially in such a small venue like the Mercury Lounge. Besides being surrounded by assholes who felt the need to compare who knew the most about Calvin Harris, I had a blast. (too bad these exact assholes were jealous of me when I made it clear that I had seen him several times before)
Reading other blogs and reviews of the show, apparently found the show to be entirely full of dancing machine concertgoers. I don't know if that was considered to be dancing to New Yorkers, but I am pretty sure maybe about 10 people were dancing. There was a lot of head bopping. COME ON PEOPLE! Its fun, ridiculous music that makes you want to dance like an idiot! Also irritating was the girl in the front row who looked like she was dragged there with her arms crossed the entire time, carrying the look of death. COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY! Of course another girl who was dancing hard was from CHICAGO, and knew how to actually enjoy ourselves. I danced so hard it was one of the most fun concerts I have been to, and definitely one of the best Calvin shows. The time I saw him at Camden Crawl may be comparable.
Afterwards, a bunch of people we met went to the afterparty at Happy Endings. Got to meet the band and hang out with them, minus mr. calvin himself. Lame. But it was fun. Got drunk. The bassist David and I are now bff. A good night. When they come back in early 2008, make sure you go see him. Its honestly a guaranteed GOOD TIME!
